Magazine Double Page Spread Analysis- Loud and Quiet

In the top third of the first page, there is a lot of negative space, and the bottom two thirds contain a large amount of very small text, set out in columns. 
One column gutter is empty, but the other contains a thin black line.
The text begins with a particularly large drop cap that catches the viewer's attention and will make them  curious as to what the word beginning with 'W' is, so they would continue reading.
The whole layout is very simple and clear, though the small sized abundance of writing may put people off reading the text.

The text has been written in a formal register and editorialised in a way that glorifies the band.

Few colours are used in this magazine, only black and white to keep it looking professional, with the additional colours coming from images only.
The fonts are clear and formal throughout. 

On the opposite page, the each member of the band has been photographed individually, then all of the photos have been added together in a 2x2 grid. 
The images are mostly dark colours with some brighter colours added by the members' clothing, making them the centre of visual interest. The colours are used so that the double page spread does not look dull or boring and people will want to read it.

The page number and magazine website is featured in a small font at the bottom outer corner of every page.

Magazine Cover Analysis- Loud and Quiet

The masthead of the magazine is a bold, capitalised font, so descenders and ascenders are eliminated, which conserves space and makes the masthead look neater. The black colour makes it appear more serious than another colour because it creates a professional and formal feel to the magazine.

Nothing on the page comes into contact with the masthead and it is given its own space, which gives the impression that Loud and Quiet is the most important element on the page and nothing is ‘worthy’ of touching it. This contrasts with the image as there is text over it, indicating it does not deserve its own space.

The image on the cover is presented in a box, so does not cover the edges of the page, creating a border.

The image shows this issue’s featured band ‘Warpaint’. The blue background gives it a cool and calm atmosphere, and the other colours on the page are of a similar colour; greys, navies, blacks- all dark colours. Colour is added by the bright pink jeans of one member of the band, the matching bright pink lipstick of another member, and another wears a red dress. This livens up the page and stops the colour scheme from being boring.

The members of the group with dark brown hair are positioned behind their co-member with bleach blonde hair, which makes the blonde haired girl stand out more.

The tagline reads 'The alternative music tabloid', informing the reader of what genre and style to expect in the magazine.

The plugs say what will be included in this issue. In this issue it is albums of the year.#

The main cover line provides some information on the main article, which is "All you need is love, death and dance", relative to the feature band.

All of the text is easy and clear to read, which will make it appeal to a wide audience. 

The cover is not busy. Instead it is simple and effective, with the white background and the image and masthead placed on top in their respective areas, keeping the layout 'tidy'.

Magazine Contents Analysis- Loud and Quiet

The title 'Contents' clearly states what the page will be about. It creates a legal register and is in a clear, bold and capitalised font, which highlights its importance.  

The date is displayed underneath, reminding people what issue it is.

The font used is very small so that a lot of text can fit on to one page, while creating negative space that makes this page appear more pleasing than if there were less space, which would make it look overcrowded. This will also make it easier for the audience to choose what they want to read.

Emboldened subheadings show the main features of the page on the left side third as this is the most appealing information on the page. 

On the right side third, the contact information and issue's credits are shown.

At the bottom of the page, one column of text is flush right, while the other is flush left, to signify that they are different from each other. 

Lines are used to divide each section.

A few images of pages are included, which would effectively advertise the page to the reader. Each image has a black border so that it can easily be seen against the white background of the current page, as the background colour of all of the other pages is white too.
